50 disabled young people from across the county have competed in a three day IT competition. The UK IT Challenge, organised by the Shaw Trust, took place at BT’s Adastral Park. Teams of disabled young people took part in a variety of IT challenges to test ability, creativity and skill using different computer programmes.
The young people also heard from disabled speakers who have excelled. Steph Hanratty spoke about how she became Captain of England’s Ladies Deaf Rugby. Mitchell Camp shared his experience of representing Great Britain at the Special Olympics World Games 2015 in Los Angeles and competing in the 100m Long Jump and 100m relay. Jay, a Nigerian born British travel blogger, talked about her journeys around the world. Local MP Dr Thérèse Coffey also spoke to the competitors as the challenge was held in her constituency.
Thérèse said: "Thank you to Shaw Trust and BT for their great work in encouraging young people with disabilities to cross the digital divide by organising the UK IT challenge. I was pleased to attend and talk to the competitors. Good luck to the winners in the global final."
