Message from Therese on Lionlink:
I have today responded to National Grid Venture’s Lionlink (formerly known as Eurolink) consultation opposing all the options. You can read my full submission here.
Lionlink is one of a series of energy projects planned for East Suffolk, designed to transport offshore wind generated electricity to the UK. According to the options set out in the consultation, various areas of Suffolk Coastal could potentially be affected by plans for landing points, cable corridors or converter stations, which would have a profound impact on our local environment.
It is my strong view that onshore connections should be placed on brownfield land much further down the coast. Especially as East Suffolk will already be hosting the new Sizewell C nuclear power station.
Whilst it is now likely that the Nautilus project (which was also planned for the Suffolk coast) will now be connected via the Isle of Grain, potentially from a modular offshore grid combining North Falls and Five Estuaries. This should also be considered for Lionlink potentially combining it with Sealink and the EA1N & EA2 projects as part of the Offshore Coordination Support Scheme, with a potential connection into the brownfield site of Bradwell.
I will continue my campaign to try and make that happen by continuing to engage with the Secretary of State and the Energy Minister both individually and through the Offshore Electricity Grid Task Force that I helped set up with other East Anglian MPs. As well as with National Grid Ventures to push for the onshore infrastructure to be sited in much more appropriate locations.
To help me do that, I would be grateful if you could take the time to also respond to the Lionlink consultation. Details of which are available here. The consulation closes on the 3rd of November 2023.
