Last week I welcomed Sir John Whittingdale, Minister for Media, Tourism and Creative Industries to Orford to launch Project Gigabit. Project Gigabit will provide a total of £5 billion toward fast, reliable broadband across the UK. This significant investment in superfast, gigabit-capable broadband will massively level-up rural and poorly connected urban areas, including in Suffolk Coastal.
Project Gigabit has awarded £318 million to CityFibre, who are contributing a private investment of £170 million to deliver the project. Project Gigabit will deliver gigabit-capable infrastructure for around 218,000 homes and businesses, including for around 80,000 properties across rural Suffolk.
As the local MP here in Suffolk Coastal but also as Secretary of State for Rural Affairs, I’m proud to see that Project Gigabit is reaching the rural community. This investment will unlock not just leisure and education but help us grow the economy too. This is a great investment and I was delighted to be here in Orford to launch it.
