Therese hits out at Barclays for Breaking their High Street Pledge

Therese has hit out at Barclays for breaking their pledge on keeping open High Street bank branches. Barclays have today confirmed that they will be closing their Halesworth branch at the end of November less than a year after confirming they had no plans for closure. Dr Coffey asked for assurances from Barclays in December 2017 about the future of their Halesworth, Southwold and Aldeburgh branches – all of which were the last bank standing in these market towns.

Therese said: "This is an incredibly disappointing decision. Whilst I recognise many banking transactions are now done online Barclays own figures show that there are many people who still who still rely on High Street bank branches, especially elderly residents and local businesses. This is a particularly bitter blow as the closure of Barclays in Halesworth means there is now no bank branch left in the town."

Therese added: "I have requested a meeting with local Barclays Directors and will be asking them to commit to some form of mobile banking service. As it is the last bank standing I will also be taking this up with Ministers."

Barclays have confirmed that everyday transactions, typically carried out over branch counters (including withdrawing and depositing cash or paying in cheques), can also be completed at any Post Office with the closest being in the Thoroughfare in Halesworth
